How to walk correctly to keep your joints healthy
Follow these guidelines when you walk:
-
Keep a good posture and ensure a proper step pattern
Stand up straight. Become conscious of all 3 points of support in your feet – the base of the big toes, little toes, and heels. Imagine that a rope at the top of your head pulls you up. Try to maintain this sensation while walking. When your heel reaches the ground, roll your feet from heel to toe while stretching your toes up. - Keep your abdominal muscles and glutes tight
Your abdominal muscles support your spine, absorbing the load and protecting your back while you walk. Tighten your abdominal muscles as you walk and keep your glutes taut at each step, as it will also help to support your back.
Warming-up before any exercise will help reduce pain and discomfort. Keeping the proper posture will help enhance the results from your walk. Better results for the same amount of input should put a smile on your face!
